Q.   What is the Green Necklace?
A.   The Green Necklace is a 7km long multi-use trail that will form a continuous loop around the centre of the City of North Vancouver. This greenway will link important city parks, public spaces and natural habitats, providing safe, enhanced access for pedestrians, inline skaters and cyclists alike.
     
Q.   What is a multi-use trail?
A.   As a multi-use trail, the Green Necklace will be shared by multiple types of users: pedestrians, people with mobility aides, cyclists and inline skaters.
     
Q.   Will the Green Necklace multi-use trail be divided?
A.   Based on volume and use the Green Necklace may have pavement markings that will indicate the centreline of the trail.
     
Q.   How wide is the trail?
A.   The trail averages 3m in width with the ability to expand, where possible, in the future. To accommodate this, a buffer strip of 1.0-1.5m is being provided, where possible, on either side of the trail.
     
Q.   What is the length of the entire Green Necklace?
A.   7.0km
     
Q.   What is the length of Phase I from Jones Avenue to St. Andrew's Avenue?
A.   1.5km
     
Q.   What is the length of the Green Necklace around Victoria Park?
A.   1.0km
     
Q.   How have street crossings been improved you cross the street?
A.   Safe street crossing safety has been improved by building intersection curb extensions, additional signage and zebra striping pavement markings across roadways.
     
Q.   Why is the trail asphalt?
A.   The trail is comprised on an asphalt surface to provide access to wheeled mobility devices for people with disabilities and in-line skaters.
     
Q.   How does the Green Necklace contribute towards the environment and sustainability?
A.  
  • By providing alternative transportation options the Green Necklace will contribute to reducing automobile trips and traffic congestion thereby improving air quality and reducing community green house gas emissions.
  • The Green Necklace will provide a network of habitat linkages for urban wildlife between existing green spaces with street trees and naturalized landscapes.
  • Innovative storm water management features such as bio swales and rain gardens the will help in the protection of North Vancouver’s streams and creeks.
  • The Green Necklace will encourage community interaction, lifetime fitness and safe, easy access to parks, open spaces and streets.  
The Green Necklace will enhance the walk-ability of the City which is a major factor in determining the overall livability of a city.
     
Q.   How many trees were planted as part of Phase I?
A.   Over 200 trees were planted as part of Phase I of the Green Necklace.
     
Q.   When was Phase I be completed?
A.   Phase I of the Green Necklace was completed in September 2005.
     
Q.   When will the entire Green Necklace be completed?

A.   There are four Greenway systems planned for the City:
